Urban Decay Worn By Celebs

In a poll last year of makeup products Celebs couldn't live without was the Naked 1 palette this has been an essential for all the women also those who aren't in the public eye.

When Kim Kardashian got married everyone wanted to know what products she was wearing on her face, when her makeup artist revealed most of the products he used were from Urban Decay! (Perversion Mascara as well as Perversion Ink liner, Naked Flushed Palette, Eyeshadow primer Potion and Naked Skin Foundation).

Makeup artist Nick Barose applied Urban Decay's Skin Body Beauty Balm on the body of Sophia Bush and Gillian Jacobs during the winter to give a great glow to their skin so it didn't look dull in the winters weather.

Eric Jimenez the world wide makeup artist for UD said within an interview that Rihanna loves the products and Jessie J loves wearing the eyeshadow pencils.

When Urban Decay realised the Vice 3 palette they turned to model Chloe Norgaard to help promote and be in the campaign. She's known in the fashion industry for her bright colour hair that is forever changing colour. She worked well within the campaign as she has that edgy look UD like and portray.

Urban Decay Limited Editions

Urban Decay mostly bring out limited edition eyeshadow palettes as this is what they are great at! Some times it will included a lip stick or eyeliner to create a full look.

They have had the wizard of Oz collection- with two different palettes to create the Glinda look or Theodora look.

Pulp Fiction- It came with an eyeshadow palette, lip liner, lipstick, glitter liner and a nail varnish.

They also brought out a vice Limited edition palette

When the film Alice in Wonderland was released again UD brought out an eyeshadow palette with a pop up mirror to give that trippy quality of UD as well as Alice in Wonderland.

Urban Decays limited edition collections are always a great success and sell out within the first couple of days, I think this is down to how well they use social media and create a buzz around a product. They understand how big a youtube community is and realise sending products to beauty gurus before hand will help reach the masses of followers they have. They know how to use pinterest and instagram well, running competitions to win the collections before they are released.
Another benefit I think UD have is they don't regularly churn out limited edition collections each month like mac. So when they do have a limited edition line it is more exciting.

Wende Zomnir- Creative Director

[Adler,R. 2014] Wende Zomnir is the creative director of Urban Decay as well as a Co-Founder of the brand.  Wende and Sandy Lener set up the brand when they realised there was a gap in the market for bright colours within the makeup industry.

I've recently read an interview Beauty High had with Wendy, I found it really interesting to find how they come up with products and names and where all their inspiration is from.

When asked how they get inspiration for their new products this is what Wende replied.
"We’re looking at what’s sold well for us, we’re looking at beauty as a category, we’re looking at fashion, we’re looking at everything and just sort of getting inspiration."

She also mentions how if she is doing something a different way from her normal Urban Decay products, that makes her develop a product within the line. An example of this is the new Spring 2015 Sheer Lipsticks. within their Youtube Video she mentions how she use to mix the lipstick formulas with lipgloss and thought a better idea would just to be produce a lipstick like this.

Wende also states they take ideas off everyone even the receptionist on the front desk down to the counter girls and guys, they want to know what the customers want and what products are lacking just that extra push.

Spring 2015 Trends

I decided to look at spring summer trends of 2015 as I know the makeup designers will be looking at this to get inspiration for their summer collection. This will help me and give me an idea on how I should represent Urban Decay as a brand for my high summer look.

All types of blue are very big for this season- This is a colour I should play around with on the eyes even if it's a light pastel colour.

One shoulder look has come back, I could take this as different lines, experiment with placement of eyeliner and shape.

Nail Varnish

Urban Decay have released many sets of nail varnishes, however I am unsure whether these are available in the UK. [Desjardins, J.2013]The most recent set they have realised was the naked set, colours from the naked eyeshadow palettes they had turned into nail varnishes.

Another set they released in 2012 was the Showboat nail set this features bring colours verging on the side of neon, this was brought out around the same time as the electric eyeshadow palette.

As I was unsure if these sets were ever available on the UK website and in stores I decided to look o the website. (I am going to ask a member of the UK stores if we are had the big nail varnish kits available to us.) When you go onto the website there is no tab for just nail varnishes. There tag line is Lip, Face, Eyes and Body. I searched nails on their website and only one nail varnish came up. A colour from the Limited Edition pulp fiction collection (no longer in stock).
I decided to try the US site, surprisingly their tag line was different, Lips, Face, Eyes and Nails. Again they didn't have a tab for nails so I searched it, this time lots of nail varnish came up. Little sets and single nail varnishes. None of the big sets i mentioned above are there, they must be limited edition sets they bring out.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I need to ask a member of UK stores if we sell the big sets
Find out what nail varnishes are on the counters
If the sets are just limited edition.

Perfumes

[Muse, I 2010] Urban Decay no longer sell perfumes, however they did use to sell rollerball oil perfumes back in 2010.  It is pure fragrance that hasn't be diluted by water or alcohol.

The top notes changed in the perfume the longer you wore it and was said to be like marmite you either loved it or hated it, as it was very edgy and different just like Urban Decay as a brand.  The most popular fragrance was pistol that released again as a limited edition product.

Rebrand

In 2010 Urban Decay rebranded themselves through packaging quality of products and even the makeup counters. They wanted a more sophisticated feel to the brand. Yet still keeping their signature colour purple just not making it as intense as the original designs. A concept to keep the feel of the urban through pictures and etching in glass yet make it more appealing and sophisticated with a great visual impact.

The one of the left is the new packaging the one on the right is the old. The new packaging is sleeker and looks better quality there is also a choice to pop the eyeshadows out easily and add them into your own custom palette.( these palettes you can buy separately at the counters.)

Urban Decay changed the packaging of there primer potion as a lot of product was being wasted. They canted the bottle to a tube instead.

Urban Decay - Best Sellers

Urban Decay are best known for their Naked Palettes. Every girl obsessed with makeup will own at least one of these. We all have our favourite and there are always fights on which one is the best!

They are also well known for their eyed shadow primer potion coming now in 4 shades. It guarantees more vibrant eyeshadow and 24hrs staying power.

The last cult favourite for Urban Decay would have to be their setting sprays offering all night glamour without your makeup budging. Makeup is suppose to last 16hrs with no cracking, moving or moving into fine lines. This to me sounds like a dream and works wonders!!

Urban Decay- Adverts

Urban Decay- Social Media

Urban Decay know how to create a lot of buzz for their products just using social media. They take sneak peak photos of corners of the packaging and always like to get the fans involved by photo competitions. They know when to work the sales and making just a limited amount to start with to keep people waiting and still talking about it.
This defiantly happened with the Naked palettes.

Urban Decay- Marketing

Urban Decay have a wide audience on their pinterest account and had people pinning looks this year they would love to wear to Cochella with Urban Decay picking a winner to give tickets to at the end.

They run various competitions and offer limited edition collections normally around christmas time.

Tv Adverts

They don’t have many tv adverts as a company but I have recently seen a video campaign for their new palette on the run. In this video the girl is going about her life in the big city, Urban Decay have kept to their roots keeping this is the background of every shot. The scenery is very city like and shows urban street settings.

Eric Jimenez has been a the International Makeup artist for Urban Decay for many years now. He’s very good at what he does and loves helping and teaching people the best way to use the Urban Decay products.

Urban Decay

They are known for their experimental colours and new products.
When Urban Decay first started up they same out with 10 lipsticks and 12 nail varnishes. Now they have over 11 eyeshadow palettes. 20 lipsticks and a range of lipgloss and lip pencils.
They  now have a face range with foundations, powders and setting sprays.

They don’t really sell skincare products one product they do sell is a makeup remover thats suppose to melt your makeup down.

Urban Decay did bring out a perfume oil back in 2010 however like the rest of the brand it was very edgy and came in a roller ball form.

They so far have no hair care items.

This campaign is for the new eyeshadow palette it contains 6 shades that are wearable for every day use.

This was a magazine advertisement for their new range out called Naked Skin. Within this line is foundation blushers and lip glosses. All suppose to give that natural look like you’re wearing no makeup.
